Two-Week Academy Combines Industry Certifications, Hands-On Learning and Job Interviews

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb University recently celebrated the graduation of participants in the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Highway Construction Trades Academy, a two-week workforce development program designed to prepare individuals for careers in the transportation construction industry. Hosted through ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb’s Searight Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) program, the academy combined classroom instruction, industry certifications, hands-on training, and career preparation opportunities.

ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb President Nate Evans

The program is a partnership among the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Foothills Workforce Development Board, and ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb University. Participants earned certifications in OSHA 10, CPR and First Aid, work zone flagging, confined space safety, forklift operation, and Heavy Equipment Operator Level 1. They also received resume assistance and interview coaching throughout the program. The academy culminated with interviews between graduates and industry employers, providing participants with a direct pathway to employment in the highway construction field.

During the graduation ceremony, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters recognized the instructors and students for successfully completing the program. Waters, a longtime nurse educator, expressed appreciation for including CPR and First Aid training in the academy’s curriculum, noting that these essential skills help graduates respond effectively to emergencies.

ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb President Nate Evans also congratulated graduates and encouraged them to view the academy as an important step in their professional journey. “The credentials you’ve earned matter, but what you do with them next matters even more,â€ Evans said. “At ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb, we talk a lot about preparing people for their calling. And a calling isn’t defined by a particular degree, job title or career path. It is about discovering where your abilities, your opportunities and the needs of others come together.â€

N.C. State Senator Ted Alexander speaks to graduates of the academy.

Evans also thanked the academy’s partners, instructors, employers and workforce leaders for investing in the participants and spoke about the important role the graduates will play in communities across North Carolina. “You are helping build communities; you are helping people get to work and children get to school,â€ he said. “You are helping businesses grow and communities thrive. So, as you leave here, I encourage you not to view today as the finish line. Let it be a starting point. Take the certifications you have earned, the skills you have developed and the relationships you have made here and build on them. When an opportunity presents itself, be ready to walk through that door.â€

Also addressing graduates was N.C. Sen. Ted Alexander, who highlighted the vital role of highway construction professionals. “It’s an honor to join you today to celebrate your achievements, congratulations!â€ Alexander said. “Partnerships like this one with the state Department of Transportation allow us to have a homegrown talent pipeline, with North Carolinians supporting other North Carolinians. It is my hope that these types of programs and partnerships become the future of workforce development and job training.”

Alexander noted that North Carolina maintains more than 80,000 miles of state highways, making transportation infrastructure a critical component of the state’s economy and quality of life. “You’re laying the groundwork for a career in the highway construction industry,” he told graduates. “You are the backbone of our transportation system.”

The Highway Construction Trades Academy is funded through the Federal Highway Administration’s On-the-Job Training Program and administered by NCDOT. The initiative is designed to prepare participants for careers in the transportation industry while helping employers meet workforce demands across North Carolina.

Free Tuition, Mandatory Fees Available to Qualifying Students from Families Earning $100,000 or Less Beginning in Fall 2027

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.— ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb University is opening new pathways to affordability through its Open Door Guarantee, which will provide eligible students with free tuition and coverage of specified university fees beginning in Fall 2027. Eligible new first-time freshmen and transfer students from families with an annual household income of $100,000 or less, as determined through the FAFSA, may qualify.

The program reflects the University’s commitment to ensuring that a private, Christ-centered education is within reach for more students and families.

“The Open Door Guarantee is about making the path to a ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb education clearer and more accessible for students and families,â€ noted ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb President Nate Evans. “We want more students to have access to a high-quality Christian university where they can discover their calling, prepare for their future, and grow in their faith. This is about opening doors, expanding opportunity, and ensuring that finances do not stand in the way.â€

The Open Door Guarantee combines federal, state and ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb scholarships and grants to cover eligible tuition and mandatory fees. ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb will provide additional institutional funding when needed to close the remaining gap. Loans will not be used to fulfill the guarantee.

“We are incredibly excited to offer the Open Door Guarantee to prospective students and their families,â€ said Lauren Gullett, vice president of Enrollment. “Too often, students may rule out a private, Christian education because of the published cost without realizing what may actually be affordable for their family. The Open Door Guarantee removes some of that uncertainty by giving qualifying families a clear commitment: tuition and mandatory fees will be covered. This opens the door for more students to receive an exceptional ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb education and find a community where they belong while pursuing their goals with greater confidence in what is financially possible.â€

How the Open Door Guarantee Works

Students entering in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028 should apply to ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb and complete the 2027–2028 FAFSA by March 1, 2027, for priority consideration. ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb’s FAFSA school code is 002929.

Eligible students must enroll full time in a traditional undergraduate degree program, pursue their first bachelor’s degree, live on campus and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). No separate Open Door Guarantee application is required. The program is open to eligible students from every U.S. state and territory.

The guarantee covers standard tuition and mandatory university fees, including fees for student activities, digital learning, the Student Health Clinic, residential amenities and orientation. It does not cover housing, meals, books, transportation or personal expenses, although students may qualify for additional aid for those costs.

Eligible first-time freshmen may receive the guarantee for up to eight consecutive fall and spring semesters if they continue to meet annual requirements. Transfer students’ eligibility will be based on accepted credits, academic standing and the time needed to complete their first bachelor’s degree.

More Than One Path to Affordability

The Open Door Guarantee is one part of ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb’s broader approach to college affordability. In addition, qualifying first-time freshmen with a weighted high school GPA of 3.5 or higher may receive a merit scholarship equal to 50% of tuition. The University also offers academic scholarships, grants and competitive awards based on achievement, leadership, service and financial need.

Students from Across the Carolinas will Rehearse with Distinguished Conductors Before a Public Concert in Dover Theatre

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb University will welcome student singers from across North and South Carolina for its 47th annual Choral Clinic on Oct. 19. The daylong event will culminate in a free public concert at 5:30 p.m. in Dover Theatre.

“ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb Choirs are honored to host the Choral Clinic for its 47th year,â€ shared Dr. Joshua Cheney, associate professor of music and director of choral activities. “This event provides an opportunity for choristers in North and South Carolina to rehearse and perform together with regionally, nationally, and internationally acclaimed conductors who are industry leaders in choral education and artistry.

Cheney is expecting over 300 students to attend, and they will participate in one of two festival ensembles. The High School Festival Chorus will be directed by Dr. Alissa Rowe, director of choral studies at Louisiana State University. The Middle School Treble Festival Chorus will be led by Dr. Eric Johnson, coordinator of music education at ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb.

Throughout the day, participants will rehearse in ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb’s music facilities, interact with university faculty and students, and experience campus life before presenting the evening performance.

choral clinic

Jennifer Duckworth, the choir director East Burke High School in Connelly Springs, N.C., has brought her students to the clinic for eight years and usually has some parents who attend the evening performance. “The ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb Choral Clinic is a valuable experience for students because they get the opportunity to work with collegiate level choral directors and sing with other students who have a passion for choral music,â€ she observed. “Not only are these students learning how to improve their vocal technique and music reading skills, but they are also learning to collaborate and communicate through music. The ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb Choral Clinic inspires students to learn more difficult music and creates excitement about doing a variety of choral music.â€

The High School Festival Chorus will perform “Dies Irae by Michael John Trotta, “I Dream a World by Rosephanye Powell, “Sing Out, My Soul by Marques L.A. Garrett and “The Music of Stillness by Elaine Hagenberg.

The Middle School Treble Festival Chorus repertoire includes “Here Comes the Sun, arranged by the Podd Brothers; “Quiet Sea by Melissa Malvar-Keylock and Jill Friederdorf; “Kookaburra by Melissa Malvar-Keylock and Jill Friederdorf; and “Shout for Joy by Sally Albrecht and Jay Althouse.

Cheney noted that the clinic has become a longstanding tradition that enriches students and music educators throughout the region. In addition to the musical experience, Cheney values the opportunity to connect with fellow educators and inspire future members of the ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb choral program.

He added, “Personally, I look forward to this event every year because I am honored to provide this opportunity for my colleagues and their students in k-12 education, to be in community with them, to share in the stage with them, and to get to know future students and members of ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb Choirs. It really is a great day!â€

The concert is free and open to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Dover Theatre on the ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb campus.

Auxiliary aids will be made available to persons with disabilities upon request 10 working days prior to the event.  Please call 704-406-4270 or email disabilityservices@gardner-webb.edu with your request.

The 2006 Alumna and Founder of Socially Stetson will Lead a New Searight PACE Certificate Program in Freelance Social Media Marketing

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—With over 20 years of experience in the digital marketing sphere, ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb University 2006 alumna Stetson Patton specializes in helping small businesses and personal brands elevate their online presence. In September, she’s returning to her alma mater to share her strategies in a new Searight PACE Freelance Social Media Marketing Program.

Patton said this class is for everyone from beginners to those who already know how to post on social media. It’s for the person who wants a career change or someone who has a full-time job but needs extra income. One client could bring $2,500 a month or more.

“This is going to be a 101 class,â€ she noted. “If you are just like interested in learning about social media, how to make some extra income, we’re going to the basics here. I’m going to teach you the different platforms. Even if you’re already posting, this class is for you

because we’re going to teach you what makes a video go viral, how to script that, how to use AI to find that, how to find clients.â€

An unexpected turn of events led Patton to ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb, where she found opportunities that would influence both her personal and professional life. Just months before her freshman year, she suffered a vocal cord injury and lost a music scholarship to another university. Encouraged by her father, then ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb Head Football Coach Steve Patton, she enrolled at GWU with plans to stay for only a year. Instead, she immersed herself in campus life, became a cheerleader, forged lasting connections and discovered a passion for marketing that would launch a decades-long career.

“My freshman year, I met my best friend on campus, Dr. Charles Tichenor, marketing professor, she shared. “It was a fluke that I got put in a marketing (upper level) class as a freshman, and he was such a good mentor. I fell in love with marketing through that.

Tichenor offered practical advice and taught the class from his years of experience as the former CEO of Kraft and later as chairman, president and CEO of Champale Inc. Sparkling Beverages.

After graduating in 2006, Patton put her newfound passion to work as marketing coordinator for The Tapestry Group, a nonprofit ministry for women founded by ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb alumna Sharon Decker. Facebook was still new, and Patton quickly recognized its potential. Because Decker also worked in economic development in Rutherfordton, N.C., Patton visited churches, car dealerships and restaurants throughout the area, offering to create Facebook pages for local businesses for a fee.

The experience not only sharpened her business instincts but also offered an early glimpse of social media’s growing power to connect organizations with their audiences. Next, she took her skills to work as membership connection director at Dover YMCA in Shelby, N.C. She was also the dance team coach at ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb and later took the same position at Lenoir-Rhyne University. During that time, she opened a clothing boutique, which would teach her an important lesson about the growing influence of social media.

“I saw the girls at a basketball game. I was like, ‘What’s this?’ And they’re like, ‘Instagram,’â€ Patton recalled. “And I was like, ‘What is Instagram?’ So, I think being around the college kids you learn a lot more, faster. Fast fashion really did become a thing because of social media. We lost the business due to social media because we could not keep up with the Joneses. And I remember vowing to learn as much about it as possible because we were already behind.â€

Even after graduation, Patton remained connected to the professors who had helped shape her career path. Tichenor and Dr. Tom Meaders, professor of management information systems and operations, were among the first to support her entrepreneurial venture. While Patton never sat in one of Meaders’ classes, his encouragement and willingness to invest in her success reflected the close-knit relationships she found at ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb.

“I thought it was so cool to have two professors come visit me at the store, Patton reflected. “Dr. Meaders even found a supplier for our store. To have those friendships with the professors, you just wouldn’t find that anywhere else.

After the loss of her boutique, she took another marketing job. As she attempted to learn about social media, she realized the drawbacks of watching online tutorials. “I would realize if that video was posted six months ago, it’s outdated now,â€ Patton said. “So, some of these buttons and features aren’t the same or there’s a different social media platform. Plus, I would ask a question in the comments and never get a response.â€

Through her own experience, Patton started making social media tutorials and teaching people about social media while also working full time in a marketing role. Eventually, she realized that she could open her own social media agency—Socially Stetson—and manage social media accounts for other businesses. She will bring all these insights to the PACE Freelance Social Media Marketing Program, and her goal is for every person who takes the class to have one paid retainer client by the end and making $500 or more.

The 12-week certificate program begins on Sept. 19 and will meet on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon on Microsoft Teams. The course is designed to help learners build practical skills in content creation, client management, AI tools, business development, and digital marketing. Students will be paired with a non-profit organization to manage its social media, gaining real-world experience and creating a portfolio.

For Patton, the program is about showing people that a new career path may be closer than they think. By combining practical training, real-world experience and mentorship, she hopes participants gain the confidence to take that first step. “I think that’s what I really want people to know is this is a business you can start with zero dollars. It’s just getting started,â€ she said.

Viral ‘Grunge Country’ Artist Completes Entertainment Lineup for Aug. 22 Community Celebration

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb University has announced the final musical performer for Webbstock 2026. Mississippi-based singer-songwriter Sam Donald will join the entertainment lineup for the community celebration on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Brinkley Amphitheater. The free event will welcome students, families, alumni and community members for an evening of live music, food, children’s activities and fellowship as ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb launches a new academic year.

Assistant Dean of Students & Director of Student Engagement Brian Arnold said Webbstock is designed to create opportunities for students to engage, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging. “The start of a new semester is about more than classes—it’s about finding your place on campus and connecting to the surrounding community. Webbstock is designed to bring our campus and community together through music, fun, and shared experiences. Whether you’re a first-year student or a returning Bulldog, we hope this event helps everyone feel connected and excited for the year ahead.”

Originally from Jackson, Miss., and now residing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Donald spent years performing as a guitarist in various bands before stepping into the spotlight as a lead performer and songwriter in 2021. His growing popularity has earned attention across the country, particularly after several of his songs and videos went viral on TikTok in early 2024, generating more than 15 million views in less than six weeks. The viral success led to a dramatic increase in streaming activity, with his music seeing more than a 400 percent increase in listeners.

Working alongside longtime producer Zack Keel, Donald embraced a new creative direction in 2023. Rather than pursuing conventional genre expectations, the pair focused on creating music that flowed naturally from their songwriting process. The result has been a distinctive sound often described as “grunge country,” blending the raw energy of alternative rock with the storytelling traditions of country music.

He first introduced this style through the song “Make You Want God,” which became the foundation for his evolving musical identity. He continued developing the sound through subsequent releases, including “Nickels & Dimes” and “Son of the Sandman,” establishing a growing fan base drawn to his authentic lyrics and genre-blending approach.

Donald joins Feeling 22: A Tribute to Taylor Swift and Y2K Kids to complete this year’s entertainment lineup. Together, the three acts will provide an evening of performances spanning multiple musical styles and generations, creating a memorable experience for attendees.

In addition to live entertainment, the event will feature a variety of local food vendors, artisans and small businesses. Guests can enjoy everything from soul food to freshly squeezed lemonade and shop for handcrafted soaps, permanent jewelry, candles and more.

Whether guests are returning to campus, visiting for the first time or simply looking for a fun summer evening, Webbstock offers an opportunity to connect, celebrate and create memories together.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Each year, ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb University joins communities across the nation in pausing for a Memorial Day observance to honor the lives of those who have died in military service to their country. First recognized nationally in 1868, Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to freedom and the safety of others.

Memorial day speaker cooper
Lt. Col. Michael A. Cooper

ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb’s observance for the campus and surrounding community will be held at 9 a.m. on May 22 in front of Hamrick Hall. The featured speaker is Lt. Col. Michael A. Cooper, professor of military science, Wofford College Army ROTC.

The program will include a series of reflections, readings, and musical elements led by ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb faculty and staff. President Nate Evans will open the ceremony with a welcome and invocation, followed by the national anthem performed by Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Dr. Aaron Rice. Adjunct Instructor and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Dr. Jim Rennie will lead a responsive reading of Psalm 93.

Evans will introduce Cooper, whose career reflects a deep commitment to leadership, service, and education. Cooper joined Wofford’s staff as professor of military science in August 2025, where he educates and instructs Army ROTC cadets enrolled in the military science and leadership curriculum at Wofford, the University of South Carolina Upstate, ÍøÆسԹÏ-Webb, and Converse University.

In addition to preparing senior ROTC cadets to commission as officers of character for the Total Army, Cooper partners with local high schools to support Junior ROTC programs that develop citizens committed to lifelong service.

Memorial Day Observance copy

A veteran of more than 20 years of military service, Cooper has completed multiple overseas tours and received numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Following Cooper’s remarks, the observance will move into a solemn moment, the Remembrance of the Fallen. Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley Villarose will lead the tribute. As silence is observed, she will ring the bell 21 times, which is the highest military honor for those who died defending freedom and democracy. Associate Vice President of Marketing Wilson Brooks will then play “Taps.

The program will conclude with closing remarks from Evans, followed by a benediction given by Jaquan Lynch, associate minister for Athletic Ministries.

Auxiliary aids will be made available to persons with disabilities upon request 10 working days prior to the event.  Please call 704-406-4270 or email disabilityservices@gardner-webb.edu with your request.
